General Tipping Guidelines

Here are a few important points to understand before your Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru adventure.

    Tipping is something that the hiking team depends on to supplement their income. It is an important way of showing appreciation for the hard work they do throughout your trek.

    You will only tip the hiking team members who directly support you on your trip.

    If you are travelling as a group, the tip will be contributed by each client and then divided among the members of the hiking team.

    Because of the hard and great work done by the team, you may feel that you would like to give more than the recommended amount. You are welcome to do so as an additional expression of appreciation.

    Thanking the team with cash is one of the easiest and most direct ways to show your appreciation for their work.

    Contributing anything useful to support the trekking team is also acceptable. Such contributions can show great value and appreciation to the people working on the mountain.

The Mount Kilimanjaro & Meru Team

The mountain team includes porters, chefs, assistant guides, and head guides. Every team member plays a very important role during your trek.

Porters

Porters are the heroes of the mountain because they are responsible for carrying all camping gear, food, your clothes, and other supplies required throughout the trek. They also help make the tents and perform other small but important activities on the mountain.

USD 10–15 per person, per day

Chef / Cook

The chef or cook is the team member responsible for cooking all kinds of food that you will be eating during your trip. Their work helps ensure that you have satisfying and nourishing meals while taking on the physical challenges of the mountain.

USD 15–20 per person, per day

Assistant Guides

Assistant guides are members of the team who help the chief or head guide in different aspects of the trek. They provide assistance along the trail, support hikers, help monitor the group, and contribute to the smooth operation of the mountain journey.

USD 20–25 per person, per day

Chief / Head Guide

The chief or head guide is the team member who makes sure that things are done in the right way and at the right time. He or she is responsible for ensuring your safety, navigation, recommendations, coordination of the team, and providing all other important information and assistance needed throughout your trek.

USD 25–30 per person, per day

Important Note

For a group of 2 or more tourists, each tourist has to contribute at least USD 695 so as to divide the contribution among all crew members in equal amounts.
